Ralf Schmid, Chief Scientific Officer
Ralf Schmid is a recognized leader in genetic medicine, dedicated to pioneering therapies for neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Most recently, he served as Associate Director of Neuroscience Preclinical Research at Novartis, where he advanced AAV gene therapy and RNA interference programs toward clinical translation while exploring innovative approaches in genetic medicine.
Previously, Ralf was Research Director in the Gene Therapy Program at the University of Pennsylvania, where his team established foundational gene replacement and gene editing strategies for multiple neurodevelopmental disorders. These efforts resulted in peer-reviewed publications and patents addressing treatment for Rett syndrome, Angelman syndrome, and CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder.
Ralf began his academic journey in Germany and holds a PhD in Biochemistry as well as a Master’s in Clinical Research (MSCR) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed postdoctoral training at several leading U.S. research institutions, building a career at the intersection of translational science and therapeutic innovation.

Jeff Howard, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Jeff Howard has a close, personal connection to Phelan-McDermid sydrome, and brings deep leadership experience across autism care, neurodevelopmental services, and mission-driven organizations, including leadership roles with the National Disability Institute, Goally, Ascend Behavior Partners, and iddeate.
Across his work, Jeff has partnered closely with families, clinicians, and researchers to translate complex clinical and policy insights into patient-centered care models, accessible tools, and advocacy strategies that accelerate access to care and research progress. He has extensive experience in fundraising, strategic planning, and nonprofit leadership, with a focus on strengthening research and industry partnerships, capacity-building, and advancing efforts that improve the lives of families.
Jeff holds a bachelor's degree from Webster University, a Master of Professional Studies in Advocacy from The George Washington University, and is completing his M.B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis with an emphasis in Healthcare delivery.

Trish Davidson, Project Manager
Trish holds a Masters in Public Administration from the University of South Carolina and has worked in patient advocacy and patient engagement for over 20 years, primarily leading research initiatives, public-private partnerships and patient education and support.
Trish is currently an independent consultant facilitating the development of public-private partnerships and supporting the creation and management of consortia. In this capacity, Trish supports the management of the CureSHANK Biomarkers and Outcome Measures Consortium.
